James Linen letters, 1866.

Collection consists of two holograph letters that were tipped into a book purchased for Special Collections in 1974: Linen, James, The Golden Gate (San Francisco: Edward Bosqui and Co., 1869). Both letters are written by Linen and addressed to his friend "Hiram." The letter dated March 1866 concerns reviews of Linen's book, The poetical and prose writings of James Linen (New York: W. J. Widdleton, 1866). The letter dated June 19, 1866 concerns Linen's travels and a statement made about him by his friend Hiram in an article.

James Linen, poet, was born in Scotland in 1808. He emigrated to the United States, and for many years carried on a large book-binding establishment in New York City. Later he spent some years in California, where he was an active member of the Scottish benevolent societies. His last years were passed in New York City.
